Apples 2024 Update and other annoyances

I know, it’s been a while since the last post, and for good reason, I have been busy with other things that had higher priority.

But, good news everyone, I am back!

And to keep with the traditions of this blog, I am going to vent my built up anger about everyones favourite fruit manufacturer.

But where to start?

I know, how about the latest round of updates they “blessed” us with. iOS & iPadOS 18 as well as MacOS 15.

First up, what the hell is going on with networking on MacOS??
Network shares permanently disconnect, but the Icon on the desktop doesn’t disappear, you can’t unmount the icon and the mount point is just empty. If you mount the share again the Icon is duplicated.
Only way to get rid of them is to reboot. Compared to this using the Alphabet for mounting points as Windows does almost seems a good solution. Please someone fix that. And while you are at it, there is no need for indexing and signing files on network shares or placing you dumb .DS_share files everywhere. Just display the folder contents. I prefer a speedy display over the folder remembering how I viewed the last time….

Safari on mobiles is again not able to load sites every other device with Firefox manages just perfectly and at times doesn’t even only mess the side up, but plainly refused to load the site. Or tries to mess with the URL in a way I get a “Forbidden on this server” message. Dear Tim, if your people are incapable of delivering a proper browser, which they are, just let someone else do the job ha? Just let go of that stupid rule of no other browser engines globally, so that Mozilla can go ahead and fix your mess.
Over all everything that has to do with the internet is almost as slow on my iPhone now, as if someone switched my 5G modem for a 56k one overnight, progress you know…

And while we are at it, what happened to the Mail App? It wasn’t ideal in iOS 17 but we are off to new lows. I mostly do mail on Thunderbird on the desktop, but after a day of work, my iPhone still shows all Mails as unread and in the inbox even if it has been dealt with hours ago, manual refreshing of the inbox makes no difference at all. This App is absolutely broken and useless for me by now.
But I found a way to trigger a proper refresh. Just reboot the phone, no, seriously, I now reboot my iPhone twice a day, so I get a proper number of open Mails in my Mails App. Sometimes more often.

You think we are done now? Think again

Somehow Apple managed to break the API that provides Apps with access to the photos library. It randomly crashes so access is blocked for all apps and you have to reboot you phone to fix it. (Do you see a pattern here?)

Yesterday in vienna I had to reboot my phone to convince it to reconnect to he mobile carrier network while driving, it just decided that being a phone wasn’t that important any more.

You know that fancy stand-by mode feature that iPhones have? Where they display information while charging horizontally? If you receive a notification in this mode in iOS 18 and pick it up, you have to lock the screen and unlock it again for the iPhone to properly display it. Great, I don’t need notifications anyway…

10 times since MacOS 15 I had to reboot my MacBook Air because the keyboard would not work anymore after waking from sleep. Did nobody test that? Waking from sleep was a keynote point for the M Series Macs a while ago.

And then there is the big thing

I am an EU citizen and recently the EU pissed of uncle Tim by forcing Apples walled garden open for EU citizens. So now Apple decided to give us the finger.

Apple Intelligence -> No word if and when that could be coming to the EU

Mirroring the iPhone to you Mac -> Not available, due to regulatory issues

I am trying to remember where I have seen this kind of behaviour before. Ah yes, kindergarten, where a child sits in the corner pouting because it wasn’t allowed to hog all the toys.

So where are we, I know have new Version numbers on my devices, with no new features because someone is being childish and everything works worse than before. Nice, I really feel appreciated as a customer…
